Forward speed depends on : hull shape, motor horsepower/torque, gearing, shaft speed, prop size/pitch etc……trial and error 😊

How do you keep the ice from damaging the boat?

I tried a lip seal but could never get them to work despite persevering and trying various cooling and lubricating mods. They were very good at wearing a groove in the shaft though 😅 In the end we Changed to a PSS seal which never leaked at all.

They are litterally in every grocery store, home depot, lowes, dollar stores, corner stores, mom n pop shops...gas stations might even sell them. I know foreigners like to throw jabs at America, but you all have it backwards.

While you MAY be able to get away with winter or spring Artic sailing in the Pacific,, its not wise to do that in regions where there are iceburgs like Newfoundland, Labrodar NE Canada. My practicle Coast Guard experience is there are thousands of bergy bits, house sized ice burg pieces invisible at night in the Western high Atlantic, especially in the Spring. You run into one and your boat sinks.

Exhilarating day out! How long to ski down to the sea?

Very valuable video and definitely a huge amount of work you put in. What most people don't know is that on boat renovations you almost always work in really awkward positions - welding over head or doing stuff in cramped spaces. Also, outfitting a boat is very expensive - but Garcias are built well and from your perspective it was probably worth it to a.) have this experience and b.) also now know exactly where which cable runs and what part went where. If you buy a boat and sail it right away it takes a long time to learn its ins and outs and really understand how it was built and how every detail works - which for your kind of trips is very necessary knowledge. Good luck with the NW-passage then!

This is a fantastic video showing a safety practice that most Boaters will never use in their lifetime, however when it is needed will prove invaluable to the few who utilize it. An excellent educational tool... and a reminder to reserve chocolate for those special moments! 😅

Love this, looks like you're having a great time. My wife and me had the same realization about SUP boards, we thought they were boring and lame but now it's our favorite way to explore the coast, and almost better in winter than in summer. Enjoy your travels!
